Jason Van Der Spuy Mr Big Air

Jason Van Der Spuy Mr Big Air

Jason Van Der Spuy is a highly skilled kitesurfer who has made a name in big air kiteboarding. Born and raised in Melkbos, South Africa, he began his kitesurfing journey at the young age of 4, and by the time he was 7, he was already participating in competitions. Jason started representing South Africa internationally when he was only 13 years old. By the age of 14, he had already won the title of SA Junior Champion twice.

Red Bull King of the Air (KOTA)

Although he had been competing in kitesurfing events for years, Jason’s early competitions from 2008 to 2016 focused on freestyle events. However, in 2016, his interest shifted towards big air, a more extreme form of kitesurfing that involves executing tricks while getting as much height as possible off the water2. This change in focus was primarily due to the influence of the Red Bull King of the Air (KOTA) event, which he watched growing up in Cape Town. Initially, Jason had no interest in participating in the event, preferring to enjoy it as a spectator. Still, his love for big air developed in 2016, and he increasingly wanted to compete.

Airush Lift

In 2019, Jason had his first opportunity to participate in the KOTA event, an experience that significantly shaped his career. He competed again in the 2022 KOTA event, where he put on a show and demonstrated the capabilities of the Airush Lift, a kiteboarding product he endorses. Despite being knocked out in the second round, he remained optimistic about the experience and expressed excitement for future KOTA events.

Over the years, Jason has achieved impressive feats in big air kiteboarding. In 2017, he joined the 20m Woo Club, a group of kiteboarders who have completed jumps of 20 meters or more. His current highest jump is 33 meters, a testament to his skill and determination.

He has also found his niche with short lines, a kiteboarding technique involving shorter lines to achieve more control and bigger jumps. Currently, he is ranked 5th in the Big Air Kite League.

Jason’s career took a significant leap forward when he joined the international team of Airush, a leading kiteboarding company, in October 2022. This move was a dream come true for him, and he took great pride in showcasing the company’s products at KOTA 2022 in front of thousands of spectators and a live-stream audience.

Despite all his achievements, Jason remains a humble and hardworking athlete.

He is constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in big air kiteboarding and is excited about the future of the sport.

His journey perfectly exemplifies how passion, dedication, and a love for extreme sports can lead to an exciting and successful career.
